The holidays are a time of bustle and confusion. It may sound cliché that we often lose track of what really matters, but, you know what? There is a fair amount of truth behind such clichés. So, it seems rather appropriate that for this final Finest of 2015, I selected a book centered on an exploration of family.
Last month, Saga returned from its intra-arc sabbatical with an update on Hazel. The issue focused on how well (or not) the child was adapting to life in a refugee detention center. This week, the series shifts the focus to her parents, asking how well they are handling their daughter’s absence. The answer is not too bad, under the circumstances. “Marcus is hunted by his classmates as their final exam! Remender Remember how this story left off? Marcus is in big trouble. You don’t just get a talking to by your parents for failing at this school, you get expelled…permanently. The new arc starts now! “
How many stellar comic book covers were there this year? So many that instead of restricting myself to an arbitrary number like 10 or even 20, I have assembled a list of 26 spanning a variety of artists and styles. As in the past, I limited myself to one selection per artist or series.
A popular store to shop in this holiday season is Chapters. I have been in a few times this season shopping for my family. Chapters is the Canadian version of Barnes and Noble. They have a good comic book selection but I rarely buy comics from there, I prefer to support my local shop owner. One of the first things you see upon entering the store is their best seller wall and this holiday season it shocked me to enter and find Saga volumes 1 to 5 sitting right front and centre on the best sellers rack. I understand Saga is a big deal, but I dabble mostly in the comic book world. I had no idea I would find Saga on the best sellers rack of Chapters. More importantly, I didn’t find Saga Volume 1 on the best sellers rack, I found volumes 1 to 5. Sure, you may pick volume 1 up for your nephew one Christmas, but you can be sure he is coming back for volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5. Saga is addicting. It is the gateway comic. The year 2015 marks the release of Saga issues #25-#31 which comprises volume 5 plus the beginning of the next arc. The epic continues.

Tyler’s Recommendations: Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses #8
“I jumped onto the Stray Bullets train earlier this year, and have enjoyed every issue. Even without the context of reading past issues the story being told is compelling. David Lapham has built a crazy world inhabited by fully realized characters, and they’re all captivating to follow. I highly recommended this comic for any serious crime-drama fan.”
