June 2, 2015 – The Hero Initiative, the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need, unveiled its latest project today, The HELLBOY 100, in collaboration with HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola and Dark Horse Comics. To create the HELLBOY 100, Dark Horse Comics printed 100+ blank covers of the landmark first issue of HELLBOY & THE BPRD: 1952, written by Mignola and John Arcudi and featuring the art of Alex Maleev with colors by Dave Stewart. The Hero Initiative then commissioned internationally renowned comic book artists to do an original drawing on each cover, including Gabriel Bá, John Cassaday, Fábio Moon, Eric Powell, Bill Sienkiewicz and Mignola himself. The originals will be auctioned off via at the rate of approximately 10 per week for 10 weeks. Both hardcover and softcover editions of a book collecting all the covers will published by Dark Horse Comics in September, 2015.

“Many of the comic book creators working in the’50’s, 60’s and ‘70s had no ownership of their creations and receive limited or no royalties,” said Hero Initiative President Jim McLauchlin. “When creators have medical or financial problems they can’t handle themselves, we help them. We’ve been able to save people’s homes, prevent evictions, and get people the medical treatment they desperately need. The goal of the Hero Initiative is to improve creators’ quality of life and in some cases, save lives.”

“John Arcudi suggested we work with the Hero Initiative to create the HELLBOY 100,” said Mike Mignola. “I’m glad we could support the important work that Jim McLauchlin and the Hero Initiative does on behalf of comics’ creative community.”

  1. Just want to say that Larime Taylor of Image comics “a voice in the dark” is having some difficulties paying for his wife’s cancer treatment. If anyone that likes that book could donate I’m sure he would appreciate it.

  2. I wanted to like your comment, but such saddness warrants a dislike.
Thanks for the info. I definitely want to help. That man has provided happiness in my AND my wife’s life, and that is not a trivial matter as far as I’m concerned.

    1. How. The last post is from Like May of last year. Did he make it to Arizona? I feel kinda shitty for not going to the Phoenix convention a couple weeks ago cuz I bet he was fucking there.

        1. I think that the last i heard was something from a month or two ago about not being able to afford chemo. Like a tumor was removed but chemo costs more than a hundred grand so they pretty much can’t do that. They are both still working on the comic. I can’t imagine what this must be like for them.

I know they made it to Vegas and family is helping them a bit. Franky I wish Hollywood would just get in touch with him and drop a boat load of cash in his lap because he deserves it (and the comic is good enough).

              1. You ought to. It’s cooler than I thought it would be bcuz I don’t like Facebook. I actually had a brief exchange with Larime late last night after I read your comment. I asked about his situation. He said the book was on “hiatus”. That he was working to complete the second arc and that it would be put out digitally. I’m still waiting for a reply as to whether or not he still does the head sketches. Perhaps 1 of the fine gentlemen here at NBC could do an article to raise more awareness. That would be cool.

On an unrelated note,I totally geeked-out this morning when Geoff Johns favorited something I typed. Even though it’s easy to “favorite” praise and it was really insignificant to him, I thought “I’ve been reading that motherfucker’s words for a long time and he actually read some of mine” (complete with emoticons 😉).
I know it’s totally stupid, and I’ve actually met him before and didn’t geek-out as much, but just the very idea of him reading my written text has given me a Chestshire sized grin all morning.😸

                1. Just be careful if you talk shit about Gamergate, Mens Rights or Bleeding Cool. Anon assholes or known asshole Rich Johnston will come out of the woodwork to “debate” you

                  1. Ya, that’s the kind of thing I’m worried about. I know on the celebrity side they have to put up with a lot of negative energy.

                    1. Actually what I feel worst for is well known writers. The amount of nonsense that someone like Zach Lowe has to read must be exhausting.

                    2. I don’t know who Zach Lowe is, but I think I can relate that sentiment to guys like Johns & Bendis who hold our beloved Big2 characters & Universes in the palm of their hands.

                    3. I’ve been on Twitter since Easter and haven’t had any problems and YOU KNOW the kinda of shit I spit out. I’m polite enough, though, and don’t attack people, just ideas.
