Comic Convo: Image Comics Releases 8/17/2016

385280._SX640_QL80_TTD_Dean: After a slow past week of Image books we pick things up again with a Wednesday full of violent and visually stunning comics. Creighton is joining us for the talk this week. Creighton, what books did you read this week?

Cosmo: I read Descender, The Wicked + The Divine & I Hate Fairyland.
Let’s start off with Descender. I’ve been really enjoying this series, and thought that the current arc’s focus on filling in various characters’ background has been intriguing. So I was looking forward to seeing what Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen would do with the pet-bot. However, while it had the typically lush and lovely art from Nguyen, I was disappointed in the script. Unlike the previous two issues, it didn’t really tell us much about the character we did not know already. Not a bad issue; it definitely had some poignant moments. Just not as sharp as the previous two.  Continue reading Comic Convo: Image Comics Releases 8/17/2016

Dean’s Recommendations …
JupitersLegacy2Jupiter’s Legacy Volume 2 #2
“Is it weird that this book is called volume 2 #2? Yes. But try not to let that discourage you from buying this fantastic comic. It took a long time for Jupiter’s Legacy to return, but it is back and issue #1 was everything you want it to be. It was the best comic of the week and I’m fully expecting this one to follow that trend.”

The Wicked+The Divine, Prince & Modern Pop Music

“Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me?”

The Wicked + The Divine 6On April 21st, 2016, popular music lost one of it’s most innovative and important artists in the passing of Prince Rogers Nelson, or as he’s most often to referred to as, Prince. The singer’s death caused a mixture of emotional outpourings from fellow musicians, those in the record industry, music writers & fans alike. As a solo artist, Prince touched so many peoples lives in different ways while being one of the most prolific and forward thinking artist of the 20th century. Skewing genre, Prince’s DNA can be found across the modern pop landscape in rock, EDM, hip hop & modern R&B in equal measure. One only needs to take a cursory listen to Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk, Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, A$AP Rocky, MIA, Diplo, Miguel, Fetty Wap, MGMT, Frank Ocean, Skrillex, Young Thug or any  number of popular musical artists and hear Prince’s DNA engrained within the sound. So when the prolific creative partnership of Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles teamed up to create the ongoing creator owned series, The Wicked+The Divine, a comic book where several pop star analogues are made as gods visiting earth for a brief two years and thrown into modern celebrity culture, a character representing Prince was a no brainer, even if they held back on revealing very much about the character until the books second arc. Based on the Summerian god of love, fertility & warfare, Inanna arrived in issue six of the series fully realized and instantly recognizable as Prince. But in the wake of the artists untimely passing, looking at how The Wicked+The Divine explores Prince through the symbolism of Inanna & the Pantheon in the fandemonium arc and how his legacy influenced the analogue character’s explored in Commercial Suicide gives a fascinating portrait of modern popular music, Prince’s place in it and how we got here. Angela: An Angel’s Evolution

“Who can be anything forever?”

-Marguerite Bennett,

Angela: Queen of Hel #7

Angela Queen of Hel 1 Stephanie Hans(crop)
Stephanie Hans

When Angela first appeared 23 years ago in the pages of Spawn #9, it was a rather unassuming debut. Guest written by Neil Gaiman with art by Todd McFarlane, it was pretty representative of Image in its early days. My younger Sandman obsessed self snatched it up only to shrug my shoulders at the whole thing. My older (still Sandman obsessed self) had a similar reaction when revisiting it. In spite of all this, the character has of late gone through a rather fascinating evolution. Later creators have been able to mold what was originally an embarrassing example of 90s excess into an endearing character.
