Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #3

WrathoftheEternalWarrior3

By Robert Venditti, Raul Allen, Patricia Martin, David Astruga, Borja Pinado, David Lafuente

Gilead’s journey to the land of the living is almost complete, if he can get past a horde of demons standing in his way.

Venditti manages to mine Gilead’s introspective side once more in this issue, but in a new way. Before we saw his reluctance to leave his family and their idyllic life in limbo and now we see his doubt as his journey took a downturn during his capture. He’s tortured many times by Humongous and his legion for revenge at his past victories, but even then Gilead finds strength to overcome and escape. This is revealed as a flashback to his previous adventure and the present day shows him reaching the Iron Door and within grasp of the land of the living if he can best Humongous once more.

The art this issue is truly the highlight, with dark gorgeous colors and stark silhouettes of the characters. It enhances the tension of the story as it strips it down to fear vs bravery, fight vs flight. The detail of the grotesque demons and injury on Gilead are rendered well, forming a nice contrast between the simplified shadows and regular character pencils. Along with Patricia Martin’s colors the art is a veritable feast for the eyes like the last two issues.

If I had one complaint, it would be that this arc is almost at its end creatively. Gilead’s journey has been building up to this moment for awhile now and resolving it to start a new arc would keep the narrative momentum moving in the series.

Overall, Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #3 is stronger in the art than story while still telling the same plot of a hero triumphing over evil. It’s done well enough, but after seeing it in the previous two issues feels worn out by this point. Hopefully the next issue will advance Gilead’s adventures outside of the nether world and onto new challenges.
