Comic Convo: Strange Fruit #1

STK672708Cosmo: What did you think of Strange Fruit? Live up to expectations?

Pat: It wasn’t as good as I hoped for but I didn’t think it was as bad as people said either. It’s definitely problematic

Cosmo: I found it very heavy-handed. Now racism was much more explicit in that time and place, but it still seemed like Waid was being too blatant with this theme from the start. Except for the senator none of the whites have any character traits really except racist, and the senator is only defined in opposition to racism. I would have preferred slower unfolding, allowing it gradually to sink in with the reader how poisoned the culture was. Also would have let the characters (good and bad) be fleshed out more.

Still it was mostly exposition, so perhaps it’ll get stronger once the main narrative kicks in? Like you, I didn’t dislike it as much as was underwhelmed Continue reading Comic Convo: Strange Fruit #1
