The debut issue of Mirror presented readers with an intriguing fantasy realm which blurred the distinction between magic and science. The protagonist Ivan studies spells while accompanied by a variety of talking animals. Elsewhere in the complex, however, scientists are experimenting on similar hybrid creatures, attempting to breed more beneficial offspring (i.e. better soldiers). Predictably, this arrangement created ill-will between humans and animals, which in time led to open warfare. While the first installment restricted this conflict to glimpses along the edges of the narrative, this week’s issue brings it to the foreground. In the process, Emma Rios and Hwei Lim craft a captivating tale which is This Week’s Finest.
