Indubitable Issues and Pull List (08/16/17)

LOOKING FOR BOOKS TO BUY THIS WEEK?

LOOK NO FURTHER.

HERE ARE SOME ISSUES THAT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT.

Tyler’s Recommendation…
Spy Seal #1
“Rich Tommaso dives into the world of espionage adventure comics. Marketed as an homage of sorts to classic Tin Tin, but with anthropomorphic characters working for MI-6. Tommaso has a style all his own, but with this comic the visual link to Herge is clear. A unique voice in contemporary comics, Rich Tommaso’s work is something everyone should check out”

This Week’s Finest: Mister Miracle #1

by Tom King, Mitch Gerads & Clayton Cowles

Mister Miracle #1 is a dizzying and infectious debut issue of a series from three masters of their craft in Tom King, Mitch Gerads & Clayton Cowles, working at the height of their capabilities. Surreal, dark and engrossing, Mister Miracle takes on the conventions of Jack Kirby’s iconic New Gods characters for a modern day treatise on paranoia and fear in our era of encroaching fascism on western liberal democracy. Deeply creative and engrossing, Mister Miracle is the best debut issue of a comics series in years, and it’s excellent by almost any measure.  Continue reading This Week’s Finest: Mister Miracle #1

Indubitable Issues and Pull List (08/09/17)

LOOKING FOR BOOKS TO BUY THIS WEEK?

LOOK NO FURTHER.

HERE ARE SOME ISSUES THAT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT.

Tyler’s Recommendation…
Redlands #1
“Superstar colorist Jordie Bellaire makes her writing debut this week. Teaming up with the always fantastic Vanessa Del Rey for a tale of crime and horror about a coven of witches with devious plans in a small Florida town. I’m very excited for this one, and the creative team alone warrants your attention”

The Decline Of Traditional Retail & Comics Direct Market In 2017

A few months ago, Marvel comics faced a minor controversy over sales rep David Gabriel who partially blamed an over reliance on “diverse” titles from the publisher in addition to DC Comics making some it’s Rebirth line of comics returnable and the 2016 Presidential Election, as reasons for why Marvel’s sales have slipped in the direct market. Existing on a larger scale that economist on a whole were just starting to get a handle on at the time of Gabriel’s comments going public, was the overall decline of traditional retail shopping across the board in the broader economy.  While comics sales had been declining in comparison to the year prior for some time at that point, at six months into the year of 2017, we have the unique insight to see not only the overarching trend of decline for sales in the direct market, but an example of how Marvel & DC Comics were able to buck those trends, and whether those instances presents a stable path going forward.  Continue reading The Decline Of Traditional Retail & Comics Direct Market In 2017
