The Haul: February 2017

After an almost three year hiatus (the last post came out on 4/30/14), I’ve decided to bring back my column “The Haul.” At its inception, I vowed to write something once a week. Not only did that not happen then, but I will not even pretend to make that claim again today. However, what I can promise is to pop in at least once a month for this new endeavor. When “The Haul” first debuted, it was meant as a place where I could talk about whatever was on my mind that week in the world of comics. Having that freedom was nice, but this next iteration will have better specified boundaries. By dropping a lens over this column, I can provide a clearer focus on what it is readers can expect.

“I’m hooked on this new Image series by Azzerallo and Risso. Mystery and drama in the roaring and boozing 20s. Every issue is another tantalizing piece of a puzzle, and I expect no less from this one.”

“If you’re still not reading this book, what can I possibly say to you? How about this issue teases the epic clash of titans which fans have been clamoring for? Yep, it’s Taskmaster vs Mew the Cat. And yep again, it’s told from the feline’s perspective. Ah Mew . . . “

The weather might suggest otherwise, but December has arrived and with it the inevitable year’s end lists. Luckily, at Nothing But Comics, we’re quite fond of year’s end lists. Another night in The Big Apple, another gang of hapless crooks driving off with their ill-gotten loot. Good thing that New York has Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage & Iron Fist, whoever is house sitting Avengers Mansion at the moment to protect it. So, wait, who is protecting the city this fine evening? Is it, Doreen Green, aka The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl? That seems to be heroine the crooks are expecting. Instead, though, they are apprehended by Brain Drain, a brain in a jar affixed to a hulking robotic body. Brain Drain’s entry onto the scene is a wacky, off-kilter moment which also contains multiple types of meta (Erica Henderson’s art homages Action Comics #1’s iconic cover, while Ryan North’s footnotes continue his ongoing tutorial on computer programing). As wonky as this might sound, it all blends seamlessly together, demonstrating right off the bat that this will be another fantastic installment of this outstanding series.

“And [Squirrel Girl] you must pardon my brazenness in saying this, but your tail is as intoxicating as it is captivating.”

Pretty much any week a new installment of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl hits the stands, it is a strong candidate for Week’s Finest. Month in, month out, few other Marvel titles can equal its combination of humor, action and wild imagination. Writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson imbue the series with a distinctive flair all their own. This is a book with a unique voice, which is utterly endearing. Plenty of lesser titles would have flagged by now, unable to maintain the momentum of so much zaniness. Yet, Squirrel Girl and her companions keep chugging along, ready to face down any obstacle. Which is good, as this week, Squirrel Girl has, inadvertently, gotten herself into quite a pickle.
